I have a project that I am doing the requires me to perform a merge analysis among other things. The analysis that I am performing requires that I widen a two lane arterial roadway to three thru lanes through a major intersection in order to provide sufficient capacity. So I will have three thru lanes approximately 500 feet or more each side of the intersection, then transition back to two lanes each direction once the thru traffic is a sufficient distance beyond the intersection. The County is requiring that I demonstrate that there is adequate room downstream of the intersection before the traffic merges back to a two-lane section. They want me to demonstrate that the merge will not lock traffic up so that it backs up through the signalized intersection. My question is: Will SimTraffic model such an event and fairly accurately demonstrate if the merge condition will work well or if it will cause problems?

If not, is there another way that I can use Synchro or SimTraffic (version 6) to forecast the operation of a merge condition such as the one I have described? Thanks, Terry Brown Albuquerque, NM  Location: Albuquerque, NM usa  Registered: Sun June 08 2003. Hi Terry, You can do this with SimTraffic. 500 feet fter the intersection, you would create a bend node where the lanes will taper from 3 to 2 lanes. The drivers in the right lane will prior to the bend. Based on the driver logic, some will merge well in advance of the merge (conservative drivers) and other will merge closer to the merge (agressive drivers).

At the upstream intersection, you will see the right lane not as utilzed as the other two lanes since the drivers are looking downstream. Also, friction will be caused by vehicles merging in at the downstream taper and this could eventually impact the major intersection. - John John Albeck Trafficware  Registered: Fri March 14 2003 Ignored post by posted Fri January 16 2004 08:49 AM.
